Regretted passing of Willie Lyons
Muff has lost its oldest male resident with the recent death of William Lyons.
In his 98th year, he lived all his life in Upper Drumskillen, Muff and died after a very short illness. A farmer all his life, he loved the quiet, simple way of life. His greatest love, apart from his family, was his pipe and ballroom dancing and until age intervened he never missed the weekly dances in Muff, leading the floor, showing off his dancing skills and as a mark of respect a minute's silence was observed in the Squealin' Pig last Sunday night. He is survived by his brother, Mickey, Glasgow, who is the last surviving member of the family; his sons, Joe, Upper Drumskillen, Gerard, Ture; daughters, Sadie, Bridgend, Maggie, Dublin and Bridget, Derry; his 36 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren to whom sympathy is extended. He was predeceased by his wife, Annie, his son, Dan and daughter, Mary.
Requiem Mass was concelebrated in St. Patrick's Church, Iskaheen by Fr. John Farren, PP Muff, Fr. Daniel McFaul, CC, St. Eugene's Cathedral, a close neighbour of the family, Fr. Joe and Fr. Dermot, Dublin. The music was provided by the Brogan Family and burial took place in the adjoining graveyard. Willie, as he was better known, was a popular member of the community, the number of people who attended the wake and funeral was evidence of how much he was thought of. May he rest in peace.
There was a great sense of surprise in the area when it was learned that Sgt. John McPhillips had retired from An Garda Siochna. Sgt. McPhillips, a native of Clones, Co. Monaghan, has been stationed in Muff for the past 19 years. He was dedicated to his job and took his duties seriously, although very strict, he was very fair when dealing with whatever situation that arose. He enjoyed being stationed in Muff and had a good rapport with the residents. We wish him good luck, happiness and good health in his retirement.
