Religion 'not reason' for cop shooting

Dissident republicans have denied that the Derry policeman shot after leaving his son to school was targeted because of his religion.

A Real IRA source told a national Sunday newspaper that 43 year-old Jim Doherty was not shot because he was Catholic.

"He was attacked because of the uniform he wears and the state he serves, not where he worships on a Sunday," the source was quoted as saying.

The source added that the apparent lull in Real IRA attacks prior to the shooting Mr Doherty was down to a "restructuring" of the organisation.

"If there's been a lull, it's because we've been carrying out root and branch restructuring."
