Remanded for ‘flooding Tech’
Two Derry men charged with causing in excess of £100,000 in criminal damage to the North West Regional College have been remanded in custody.
Adrian Doherty of 9 Princes Terrace and James Brendan McVeigh, 3 Talbot Park, appeared before Judge Piers Grant at Derry Crown Court on Wednesday. Both men are charged with seven counts of criminal damage of the college on dates between June 26 and August 14 2011.
The court heard that the men caused flooding to the college as they attempted to clean “noxious petroleum odours” from a nearby business premises, Caesar’s Palace.
McVeigh was the proprietor of that building and business and the court was told litigation between Caesar’s Palace and NWRC was ongoing.
The flooding damage was caused by the running of a water pipe and chemicals through a partitioning wall. The college had readjusted its CCTV cameras as flooding was occurring on consecutive Sundays and saw the defendents enter the adjoining property.
Doherty, 47 and McVeigh, 65, had initially denied the charges but pleaed guilty in early February.
Judge Grant said: “I consider that these are serious offences resulting in serious damages but I will reserve sentencing in what is an unusual case. However both men will remain in custody until then.”
The case was adjourned until next Wednesday, March 20.
