Road map for Derry’s success

A new report by urban design experts has spelled out key moves that build Derry’s success.

The Academy of Urbanism - a think tank committed to developing villages, towns and cities - has made a host of recommendations, most notably that the former Ebrington Barracks site be offered as a further education institution and the safeguarding of the historic Walled City through further leisure provisions.

The report also highlights the importance of promoting shared cultural heritage and that public services arising from the sectarian history of the city are “superseded by rational, city-wide services”.

The comprehensive report has taken note of a diverse range of factors which will contribute to or hinder the success of the city generally and was drawn up following the academy’s ‘Place Partnering Diagnostic Visit’ to Derry earlier this year.

The primary purpose of the exercise was to help the people of Derry-Londonderry build on their success in receiving the Academy’s Great Town Award 2012, by identifying potential obstacles to longer term and broader success.

The secondary purpose was to provide an insight for Government and local representatives into methods of enquiry that may help the new local authorities which come into being in 2015, to take up their new responsibilities for planning.

Among other recommendations made by the academy are the siting of a proposed maritime museum and City of Culture “legacy facilities” in the historic city centre.”

It also found that further cultural and leisure/entertainment facilities should be centred around Guildhall Square and Harbour Square to “help establish a substantial cultural focus at the western end of the Peace Bridge, balancing future complementary facilities on the Barracks site at its eastern end”.

It further states that old industrial premises should be used for “housing and possibly hotel/hostel/new industry uses”. View the full Academy of Urbanism report here
