A Derry schoolgirl will next month sing at one of the world’s most prestigious concert venues.

Thornhill pupil Laura McNutt will grace the stage of the Royal Albert Hall as part of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain’s performance of Monteverdi’s ‘Vespers’.

The 12 year-old from Cloughcor was the only pupil from the north to successfully make it through the auditions for the junior choir after wowing judges with her performance of Pie Jesu back in January.

“We are absolutely delighted,” Laura’s mum Angela told the ‘Journal’ yesterday.

“She is ecstatic, singing is all she has ever wanted to do and she is really looking forward to it.”

Laura, who will be accompanied by dad Gregory when she flies over for her London performance, will spend the first week of April in Oxfordshire, benefiting from individual training as well as rehearsing with the other choristers.

“It’s her first time away from home and we really hope she’ll enjoy it. This is such a brilliant opportunity for Laura,” Angela says.

Angela says her daughter - the eldest of six - took to singing from a young age, winning countless medals at Strabane Feis in the process.

As well as singing at school, Laura, a Year 9 pupil at Thornhill, also performs as part of the Derry Youth Choir.

“Both have been great to Laura, and we are so grateful for the encouragement they give her,” Angela says.

Laura takes to the Royal Albert Hall stage on April 14.
