Sad passing of Peter McLaughlin
There was great sadness in Muff at the death of Peter McLaughlin after a short illness.
Aged 79 and a businessman for more than 40 years standing, Peter was hugely well known in Muff and further beyond and his wake and funeral was one of the largest seen in the area for years. Born in Crislaghkeel, Fahan in 1929 Peter was one of eight children born to Jimmy McLaughlin and Mary (nee Devlin). Along with his brothers he established a successful garage in Bridgend in the 1950s. Peter and his brothers eventually went their own ways with Peter establishing the famous Matador bar in Muff. Possessed with a shrewd business mind, he later established a garage in the village which he has since passed on to his sons. Peter married Patricia (Patsy) McConalogue from Carndonagh in 1962 and they were blessed with seven children. With his sons and later grandsons Peter operated McLaughlin's Service Station in Muff for many years. As Fr. Farren remarked in the homily during Peter's Requiem Mass, he was a familiar figure perched cross-legged in the Portakabin and watching the world go by.
His Requiem Mass was concelebrated by Fr. John Farren, Fr. Eugene Boland, Fr. Daniel McFaul and Fr. Colm Morris. Also in attendance was Fr. Jim McGonagle. The readings were read by his younger daughter Denise and eldest son Jim. The prayers of the faithful were read by his grandchildren: Gerard, Padraic, Peter, Laura, Clodagh and Vanessa. The gifts were brought up by his daughters Sharon and Annemarie, son Peter and grandson Emmett. Music was provided by the Brogan family and his grandchildren Cara and Dairine sang a beautiful rendition of Our Lady of Knock. His son Kevin delivered a moving eulogy that moved many of the large congregation to tears. Peter bore his illness with great dignity and fortitude and died peacefully on 16th April surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Patsy and their children Jim, Paddy, Annemarie, Sharon, Peter, Kevin and Denise. Thirteen grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, brother John and sisters Evelyn and Kathleen. To all these deepest sympathy is extended. He was predeceased by his brothers Patsy, Louis, Kevin and Columba and grandson Jack who died on the 14th March year. May he rest in peace. The Month's Mind Mass for Philip Rutherford will be celebrated in Iskaheen on Monday night at 7.30pm
A warm welcome is extended to Garda Paddy Cunningham who is the newly appointed Garda to serve in Muff Station. He was previous stationed in Carndonagh. We wish him well in his new appointment.
