'Should be commended for removing flags' - Judge

A judge in Limavady has said that a Derry man charged with removing flags from lamp posts should be commended.

District Judge Eamon King was speaking at Limavady Magistrate's Court on Wednesday when the case of Ciaran Patrick David Melaugh was brought before him.

The 19-year-old from Whitethorn Drive, Derry, is charged with doing a provocative act on the 18th of July 2009 at Burnfoot Village, outside Dungiven, namely removing flags from lamp posts during the marching season with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or by which a breach of the peace or public disorder was likely to be occasioned.

When Melaugh's defence solicitor brought the case before the court, Mr. King said: "Removing flags from lamp posts, I thought he should have been commended for that."

Mr. King later reiterated his feelings a second time before the case was adjourned until April 7.
