The newly unveiled 11ft bronze sculpture of St Columba marks the beginning of the citys Christian Heritage Trail from St Columbs Park to the Walled City.

An 11 foot tall bronze sculpture of St Columba releasing a dove was unveiled in the city today.

The new artwork, by artist Niall Bruton and located at St Columb’s Park, marks the start of the city’s new Christian Heritage Trail.

Funded by Ilex, through the Department for Social Development’s UK City of Culture Capital Infrastructure Fund, and developed by the Churches Trust, the trail is believed to trace the original Pilgrims’ Trail route.

It will start at St Columb’s Park, continue through Ebrington Square, over the Peace Bridge and into the Walled City.

New seating and public artworks by artist Eleanor Wheeler are also being installed as part of the project.

The new sculpture was unveiled by Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland.
