Suspicious fire in vacant building at Eastway

Police at Strand Road are investigating the cause of a suspicious fire in an industrial estate in the Eastway area of the city on New Year’s Day. At around 10.45am on Tuesday, police received a report of a fire in one of the units at the Rath Mór Business Park. Four tenders from the Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and the fire in the unoccupied building was quickly brought under control.

The unit sustained minor damage and there were no reports of any injuries.

An adjoining building, the Sinn Féin constituency office, sustained minor scorch damage in the incident.

Eyewitnesses said it appeared that rubbish and crates had been piled up against a wall in the empty building and set alight.

The PSNI have asked anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who has any information to contact them at Strand Road on 0845 600 8000. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
