Sympathies from church leaders and ministers

Monsignor Eamon Martin

Monsignor Eamon Martin

Speaking on behalf of Diocesan Administrator Eamon Martin last night, Fr, Michael Canny expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Constable Reynolds. Fr. Canny said the 27-year-old’s tragic death was a reminder of the dangers faced every day by serving police officers.

He added: “It is with sadness that I heard of the death of a policewoman and the injury of two others while they were carrying out their duty.

I express my condolences to the dead officer’s family and colleagues at this time. This tragic death is a stark reminder of the risks that the police face each day on behalf of all of us as they attempt to keep our society safe. This policewoman’s family and colleagues are very much in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time.”

Justice minister David Ford also sent his sympathies on the death of Const. Reynolds.

He said: “I was shocked to hear of this tragic incident which resulted in the death of a police constable who was carrying out her duties serving the community in the middle of the night. My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time. I also send my best wishes to the two officers injured in this incident for a speedy and full recovery. It is hard to imagine how they, and indeed the wider PSNI family, are feeling. This is not the first time we have seen death and injury resulting from car crime. I call on those engaged in this crime to reflect on the consequences of their actions and stop this senseless activity.”

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA and Vice chair of the Justice Committee Raymond McCartney said: “I would like to offer my condolences to the family of the young policewomen who died in last night’s tragic incident. And I would urge anyone who has any information in relation to it to bring it forward to the PSNI straight away.”
