Teen driver failed to stop for police, then found in field

A Dungiven driver who failed to stop for police was found hiding in a field, Limavady Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday.

The court heard police in Dungiven saw Ciaran Heffernan, aged 19, driving towards to Dungiven and signalled for him to stop on Altmover Road on May 6. He continued on and police followed, but lost sight of him. They found the car abandoned and subsequently found Heffernan hiding in a field. Heffernan, with an address at 18 Corick Road, Dungiven, denied being the driver of the car.

He later admitted to being the driver after all, the court heard.

District Judge, Paul Copeland told Heffernan if he had admitted the matter in the beginning he “could have avoided sending his solicitor on a wild goose chase for insurance that never was and this could have been avoided”.

Heffernan was fined £300 for failing to stop and no insurance and banned from driving for three months.
