A Derry teenager remained in a critical condition in hospital yesterday after falling from a moving taxi.

The 19 year-old girl, who is believed to be from Creggan, suffered serious head injuries after falling from the moving vehicle at Foyle Road at around 7am on Saturday.

She was in a critical but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit of Belfast’s Royal Victoria hospital last night after being transferred from Altnagelvin Hospital. It’s understood she was on her way home following a night out and was a passenger in the vehicle when the incident took place.

Foyle Road was closed for several hours as a police investigation into the incident got underway. Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.

A spokesperson said: “Anyone who was in the area of the Foyle Road at around 7am and witnessed the RTC is asked to contact Police at Strand Road station on 0845 600 8000.”

Sinn Fein Councillor Mickey Cooper, who visited the scene on Saturday, said it was a shocking incident.

“It must be shocking for any family to wake up to news that their child has been hurt in an accident. It is very sad for all of those affected by what happened.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the girl and her family at this tough time.”
