Teens arrested after CCTV appeal result
Police swooped on three teenagers yesterday morning after they were allegedly identified from CCTV images by members of the public.
The trio were arrested at homes in the Bogside area in connection with interface violence in June. Two brothers were arrested at around 9.30am while a third youth was taken into custody at around 10.30am.
All three were arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour and possession of offensive weapons.
CCTV images of the youths were published in the 'Journal' in recent weeks as part of the PSNI's Operation Exposure campaign.
In the past two weeks alone, police have made 18 arrests following the publication of 40 images of youths that officers were anxious to speak following sectarian violence and disruption at Derry's interfaces.
Inspector Jon Burrows, who is leading the successful operation, told the 'Journal' that more than 60 charges - including multiple counts of petrol bombing and riotous behaviour - had been brought against the 18 people arrested.
"Once again working in partnership with the Derry public we have identified and arrested those involved in sectarian and riotous behaviour. I commend the readers of the Derry Journal for their cooperation with this police operation. Together we are trying to rid Derry of the scourge of sectarianism - as we prepare to host the City of Culture in 2013 there is no more pressing priority than tackling sectarianism.
"The First Minister and Deputy First Minister have just published their Programme for Cohesion, Sharing and Integration which advocates a zero tolerance approach to sectarian incidents and that is an approach the police service is embracing."
