Last week, at the home of the Beragh Red Knights GAA club, Thornhill College’s Under-16 Gaelic football team capped an historic season with a marvellous victory against a spirited Colasite Oiriall from Monaghan in the final of the Under 16 ‘D’ Ulster Schools’ Gaelic Football competition.

Thornhill led at the half time interval but were pegged back in the second half with both teams finishing level at the end of full time on a score of 4-9 a piece. Ten minutes of extra time followed as both sides exhibited great courage and excellent levels of fitness. During extra-time, Thornhill scored 1-3 to Colaiste Ouriall’s five points to secure the narrowest of victories in a thrilling final.

The winning team was inspired by excellent performances by a number of local players from the Steelstown Brian Ógs club including Aoife McGough, Aoife Laverty, Megan Devine, Aoife McKeever, Naoimh Ní Mhianain, Aoife Clarke, Aisling Kelly, Rebecca McMonagle and team captain Róisín Laverty.

Thornhill full-forward Hannah Ward was named ‘Player of the Match’ after an outstanding performance that saw her notch a personal tally of 3-7 on the day. However she was ably assisted by her Clan na nGael team mates Carmel Conway and Taylor McElhinney, Craigbane’s Mairead Mortimer, Slaughtmanus’ Emma Coyle and Moville’s Bláthnaid McLaughlin, who is the current captain of the Donegal U-16 county team.
