Three arrests made in counterfeit notes search
Police made three arrests this week after they received a report of counterfeit notes being passed in a bar on the Strand Road, Derry.
A PSNI spokesperson said officers recovered a substantial quantity during a follow-up search of a vehicle. Three men, aged 22, 22 and 23, were arrested and have since been released on bail pending further police enquiries, said the spokesperson.
Police say on Wednesday 10th October, a few hundred pounds worth of counterfeit notes were passed in a shop in Derry City Centre.
Police say they have received several reports of counterfeit bank notes in circulation in Derry, Limavady, Strabane and Castlederg over the last few weeks.
“A number of counterfeit £10 and £20 bank notes have been used in some licensed premises and shops. Police advise local business people, staff and members of the public to be vigilant and take a few minutes to check notes before accepting them and always report any suspicious incidents to police,” warned the spokesperson.
“It is a criminal offence to try to pass or keep a banknote that you either know or suspect to be counterfeit. If you inadvertently receive a note that you believe to be counterfeit, you should take it to the nearest police station.”
Anyone who has any information regarding the production or distribution of counterfeit banknotes, can contact police by calling 0845 600 8000 or the ‘Crimestoppers’ charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
A ‘Know your banknotes’ leaflet can be obtained from branches of all of Northern Ireland’s main banks. Police have recovered £10 and £20 Bank of England notes, Bank of Ireland notes and Northern bank notes.
