‘Timing right to bring the Broighter Hoard home’

The timing is right to bring the sumptuous Broighter Hoard back home, a senior officer at Limavady Borough Council has declared.
Housed in the National Museum of Ireland, the “most magnificent hoard of Celtic period gold objects to have been found in Ireland” was unearthed by a plough at Broighter, Co. Derry in 1896.
Earlier this week, Limavady SDLP Colr. Gerry Mullan argued the collection should be brought to the Roe Valley in time for the City of Culture celebrations in Derry in 2013.
“The City of Culture project, which will benefit the entire province, provides an exciting and unique opportunity for Limavady to acquire these priceless objects and to have them on display in the area of their origin,” he said.
“Such an accomplishment would be invaluable for the promotion of cultural tourism in this area which would mean so much in these austere economic times.”
Limavady Borough Council has been in discussions in recent years with the Museum about what it would take to bring the Hoard home. Director of Development Services, Valerie Richmond says those discussions are ongoing.
“Council has consistently expressed a strong interest in securing the Broighter Gold on loan to Limavady,” she told the Journal. “With the presence now of Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre and with the City of Culture scheduled for 2013 in the North West the timing is right to bring this valuable collection back to its original home - Limavady. Council is following up on previous discussions with the National Museum.”
