Tributes to ‘talented rider’ after 13 year-old girl is killed in competition

Eglinton was in shock yesterday following the tragic death of a 13 year-old Co Tyrone girl in a showjumping accident.

Hannah Jessica Wiley, of Laurel Road, Artigatvan, was killed while taking part in a showjumping competition at Eglinton Equestrian Centre on Friday evening.

It is understood her horse fell on her after completing a jump, although an investigation into the circumstances of the schoolgirl’s death is ongoing.

Tributes were paid to the young girl yesterday and sympathies were extended to her parents Edna and Edmund and other family members.

Foyle Assemblyman Mark H Durkan said it was an “utter tragedy and a terrible shock. God love her family and friends and the wider equestrian community at this devastating time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” he added.

Vice chairman of Strabane Council Dan Kelly said the community in Artigarvan and beyond was in total shock.

“You can’t put into words what her family must be going through, this is such a tragic accident,” said the Sinn Fein councillor.

DUP Strabane councillor Allan Bresland said: “She was a talented rider who had won a lot of prizes recently. This was a freak accident. I would like to pay my respects to her family at this time.”

His council colleague Rhonda Hamilton added: “My heart goes out to her family, this must be devastating. To lose a child is just so awful.”

Derry City Council is investigating the incident as it is the authority responsible for the health and safety of equestrian facilities in the area.

A spokesperson said last night: “The council was made aware of the incident earlier today. In conjunction with the police we are undertaking an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

“Derry City Council wishes to extend its sincere condolences to the family of the young girl.”

Hannah will be laid to rest following a service at Leckpatrick Presbyterian Church at 2pm on Wednesday.
