Trio embark on cycle trip to South America for charity
A trio of determined young men embarked upon a self-supported cycle expedition last month which will take them the length of South America with the aim of raising as much money as possible for a worthwhile charity in each of the countries they will be travelling through.
The charities include UNICEF, but include other ideas such as the appeal for the recent earthquake victims in Peru. They feel it would be a great opportunity to witness first hand how their fundraising will be used to help others.
The trio consists of Colin and Alastair Montgomery and David Middlemiss. Colin and Alastair grew up in Limavady, attending Limavady Grammar School and playing both cricket and rugby. Colin is presently self-employed within the IT industry in London, while Alastair is working for Bank of Ireland in Belfast. David, originally from County Durham, met Colin in London. Each finished their jobs for this trip and are fully supporting themselves – both in financial terms and in terms of carrying everything they need to survive on their bikes for the entire trip.
Their route started in Ushuaia, Argentina, which is the most southerly city in the World, and takes them through most of Chile, parts of Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Columbia, finishing up in Caracas, Venezuela. They estimate the total distance to be in the vicinity of 14,000 kilometres and will take roughly seven months to complete. This time estimate is based on averaging about 100k per day, five days a week.
Although this doesn't sound too tough, in fact a large portion of the trip will be at altitude as they travel up the spine of the Andes.
The lads have registered the Internet domain name www.cyclediaries.com where they will be posting regular updates on their travels, including pictures and possibly even some video diaries from time to time. They will also be setting up a page on www.justgiving.org.uk which will enable people to give to our charity easily and enable them to claim the tax back from the government.
With so much to achieve, these lads would appreciate any help they can get from the Limavady community or wider afield, where two of them grew up. So dig deep this New Year and help this intrepid trio achieve their aims.
