Trust to consider 'other options' for sex abuse brothers

Derry MP Mark Durkan says the Western Trust has agreed to consider other options for the treatment of two paedophile brothers who are sharing a hospital ward with vulnerable adults.

Relatives of patients at Lakeview Hospital met with Western Trust health chiefs this morning following outcry over last week's decision to accommodate Fermanagh brothers James (61) and Owen Roe (52) McDermott at the Gransha facility.

Mr Durkan who attended the meeting said the meeting allowed relatives to express their concerns.

He says the Trust have now agreed to explore other options for housing the brothers.

"Their issue was not a matter of prejudice against these two men – and nobody was disputing the Trust's obligation to provide treatment to these two men – it was whether or not this was an appropriate setting.

"They made it very clear to the Trust that they couldn't accept the situation continuing – even though the Trust was able to say they have extra supervision in, extra staff there by day and by night to supervise these two men and to prevent any risk.

"The families obviously might be assured by that as a temporary measure for a temporary period but not indefinitely.

"That is why the Trust have agreed they will now consider other options for the treatment of these men that doesn't impact on these families."
