Sinn Féin councillor Kevin Campbell became the Mayor of Derry last night at the Annual General Meeting of Derry City Council.

Ulster Unionist Alderman Mary Hamilton was appointed Deputy Mayor and quickly became involved in controversy when she refused to take the chain of office from the new Sinn Fein Mayor, who served as Deputy Mayor last year.

Instead the veteran Ulster Unionist asked to receive the chain from Town Clerk, Sharon O’Connor.

The city’s new First Citizen also had to receive his chain from Ms O’Connor when outgoing Mayor, DUP Alderman Maurice Devenney failed to hand it to colr. Campbell.

The new Mayor promised to represent everyone in the city during has year in office. “As a republican I will cherish all of the people of this city equally. I want to reach out and create a process of purposeful dialogue and understanding that takes us forward as one city,” he said.

The new Deputy Mayor said it was a “great honour” to represent the city. “I will endeavour to perform my duties to the best of my ability,” she said.
