University ‘must be transparent on outsourcing jobs’
SDLP Employment and Learning Spokesperson Pat Ramsey has expressed concern that the outsourcing of jobs at the University of Ulster is being undertaken when workers’ representatives have been denied key information about terms and conditions.
Speaking on Wednesday, the Foyle MLA said: “We had a delegation from UNISON at the Employment and Learning Committee today to brief members on the current negotiations with the university about the outsourcing of approximately 250 jobs to private companies.
“I was shocked to learn that senior management at the college have refused requests from the union to provide documents outlining future terms and conditions for staff, which has only hastened the anxiety and demoralisation amongst staff, many of whom have given over a decade service to the university and its students.
“We need a fair and transparent procedure in place for this kind of planned restructuring, and the minister must be asked why senior management at the university - which is largely publicly funded after all - have not sought to engage openly with the union,” Mr Ramsey claimed. “I have supported and will continue to support UNISON and the workforce at the university to secure a fair process and an equitable outcome given their years of service.”
