Van robbed at gunpoint

Police are appealing for information after an armed robbery in the Shantallow area of Derry.

Police say two men held up a van in the Racecourse Road area of the city this morning ( Feb 20).

“Shortly before 10:40am, it was reported that two males approached the driver of the van in the area, with one man armed with a suspected firearm,” a PSNI spokesman says.

“The male was believed to have been threatened and a sum of money taken. Both men left the scene towards the Carnhill area after the incident. No one is believed to have been injured during the incident and enquiries are continuing.

“One male is described as 5”4 tall, slim build and wearing a grey hoodie, blue jeans and white trainers. The second male is described as carrying a red bag, wearing white trainers, dark jeans, a dark grey jumper or fleece, red scarf and grey beanie hat,” the police spokesman added.

Local Sinn Féin Councillor for the area Elisha McCallion said: “A robbery at anytime is a very frightening experience and is the last thing anyone would expect on a Monday morning .

“The Racecourse Road is always very busy at that time of the day ,so hopefully someone will have seen something that could lead to catching those behind this robbery.”

SDLP councillor Sean Gallagher also condemend the robbery.

“People in the area are shocked and alarmed at this incident.

“It must have been an extremely traumatic experience for the driver of the van.

“I would urge anyone who was in the Racecourse Road area around 10:30am and witnessed this robbery to come forward to the police.

“It is imperative that those responsible for this crime are apprehended and brought to justice before they strike again,” he said.
