Vandals have caused at least £1,200 of damage to a former school outside Dungiven recently acquired by a local community association.

The burglary and criminal damage happened at a former school in the Burnfoot, that been lay vacant for some years. The Burnfoot Community Association acquired the building earlier this year and hope to use it for the community.

Sometime between 30th July and 3rd August, however, vandals went on a ramapage at the former school on the Drumrane Road and almost every window was smashed. In all, roughly 20 panes of glass, some as big as four foot square, were broken. There was also damage to the interior.

Burnfoot Community Association committee member, Lyle Quigley discovered the damage on Friday.

“It was a bit of a shock. We only took over the building in June. It had been lying vacant,” he said. “It’s wanton vandalism we can ill afford.”

Mr. Quigley estimated the cost of repairing the damage to be in the region of £1,200.

“I’d appeal to the perpetrators to leave the property alone and work with us rather than against us. We are trying to improve the community by providing facilties.”

Assocation chairman, and local councillor Boyd Douglas urged whoever was behind the vandalism to leave the property alone.

He added the Association was working hard to provide better facilties for the community.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity near the school this week or has any information to contact them at Limavady Station on 0845 600 8000 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
