Vehicle collapse kills mechanic
Lessons must be learned following a tragedy which saw a mechanic crushed by a vehicle he was working on, a local councillor has said.
Mechanic and farmer Richard Orr (33) was working at his parents’ farm in Newbuildings when a van collapsed on him at the weekend. His mother later found him dead under the van in a garage after he did not return to the house overnight.
The van was raised using a jack which, it’s believed, may have slipped or snapped.
He lived with his parents, Ronnie and Margaret Orr, at Gortinure Road between Newbuildings and Derry. He is understood to have left his house at some stage on Saturday night to work on the vehicle.
Speaking to the ‘Journal’ yesterday, DUP Councillor Maurice Devenney, extended his sympathy to the family and friends of the late Mr Orr.
“My sympathy goes out to the extended family of this young man. These are very sad circumstances and this is a real tragedy.”
Colr Devenney added that others should learn lessons from the tragic circumstances of Mr Orr’s death. “We hope that lessons can be learned from this tragedy.
“We all at some time or another carry out DIY on our vehicles and jack them up. This tragedy brings home the importance of putting safety first when working on vehicles.”
DUP councillor Gary Middleton added: “I’m confident that the community will support the family in whatever way they can at this heartbreaking time as they try and pick up the pieces. It is an awful tragedy that such a young man has gone so suddenly.”
