‘Viable device’ sparked Derry security alert

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has condemned the actions of those who were responsible for a security alert in Derry which saw a number of homes being evacuated this morning.

Police are appealing for information following the discovery of what they described as “a suspicious object” outside a house in the Hollymount Park area of the Waterside on Saturday.

A PSNI spokesman said: “It was reported to police shortly after 8.15am and a number of homes were evacuated while ATO examined the object which was later declared to be a crude viable explosive device.”

Mr Ramsey said: “The discovery of a crude and viable device by the PSNI reminds us of those who would recklessly endanger the lives of people in this community. It is welcome that the device was intercepted before it could cause any damage or potential loss of life.

“Leaving such a device in a densely populated area is utterly reprehensible and must have been a frightening experience for those who were evacuated from their homes. I would urge anyone who has any information regarding this incident to come forward to the PSNI.”

Police are also appealing for information following the discovery of a suspicious object at a house in the Gortin Meadows area of the Waterside at around 6.30pm on Friday night.

A number of homes were evacuated whilst ATO examined the object which was later declared a hoax. Residents were permitted back to their homes around midnight.

Police are asking anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in relation to either incident or who has any information to contact them at Strand Road on 0845 600 8000. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
