Vigilance call after burglary spike

The head of Derry’s District Policing Partnership has warned people to be vigilant after a spike in burglaries in the city.

Last Wednesday police revealed there had been overnight reports of thefts, attempted break-ins, burglaries and suspicious activity in Talbot Park, Kingsfort Park, Gleneagles, Hampstead Park, Lisnarea Avenue and Shantallow Avenue.

They also said there had been four creeper style burglaries in the city over a ten day period.

SDLP councillor Thomas Conway, Chairperson of Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership says it’s vital residents secure their homes.

“We are fully supportive of any initiatives that raise public awareness of the need to keep their homes safe.

“As we are now coming into the darker nights I would encourage residents to secure their homes by closing and locking all doors, windows and gates even if they are just nipping out for a few minutes.

“From experience we know that a lot of residential burglaries are opportunistic with criminals taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows. Many of these crimes are easily avoidable and it is now an opportune time to remind residents to take a few simple steps every day to keep their homes secure from criminals.”

He urged anyone with any information about the recent burglaries to contact police.

Foyle Area Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Burrows added: “I would simply remind householders to close their doors and windows, lock their doors and windows and check their home is secure.

“A few minutes checking doors and windows can save people from the heartache of dealing with the aftermath of a break-in and burglary.”
