A Union Jack flag placed on a crucifix at a Catholic church in Limavady has been described as a ‘vile and disgusting act’ by local politicians.

The flag was reportedly placed on the crucifix at St. Mary’s Chapel on Irish Green Street last weekend.

East Derry SDLP MLA, John Dallat said those who had placed the flag on church property had reached a new low.

“Anyone who trespasses on church property to portray or extend their particular form of sectarianism has reached a new depth in hatred,” he said.

“This particular act will disgust all people irrespective of their background.”

He added: “It’s vile and disgusting and will be very upsetting, and not just to people who attend this church, but to all Christians.”

Sinn Fein Colr. Sean McGlinchey said: “It’s hard to comment on this because it’s unthinkable someone would actually do this.”

He added: “This is extremely offensive, and not just to parishioners in Limavady but to all Christians. Just why would anyone do this? Why?”
