Warning over fireworks
Sinn Féin councillor Colly Kelly has warned of the dangers posed by irresponsible use of fireworks in the run up to Hallowe’en.
Colr. Kelly made the call after a number of incidents in the Bogside and Brandywell ares at the weekend where fireworks were set off close to the homes of pensioners.
“I was contacted by people across the district and in particular by a number of residents from the Lisfannon Park area concerned about youngsters throwing bangers into the back yards of their homes. Fireworks and bangers are also being put inside drain pipes outside their homes and inside wheelie bins,” he said.
Colr. Kelly said children as young as 12 years-old are involved. “The residents I have spoken to have said those involved in this are very young, between the ages of 12-15 years. A lot of these bangers are being let off close to pensioners’ homes at night and it’s a very frightening experience, particularly for the elderly and any family pets. If one of these bangers goes off in a child’s hand it will unfortunately result in a child being maimed and seriously injured. By all means enjoy the festivities at Hallowe’en, but be safe and do not let what should be a bit of fun turn into a nightmare, the consequences of which could be scars or disfigurement, which last a lifetime,” he said.
The cityside colr. called for an end to the sale of illegal fireworks in the city. “The reality is that thousands of fireworks are being sold illegally. In many cases the people selling these fireworks are deliberately targeting young people.”
