Warning over Moss Park trouble

A Shantallow councillor has said warned that anti-social behaviour in the Moss Park area of the city could spiral out of control unless it is tackled.

Sinn Féin councillor Elisha McCallion made the comments following a number of incidents in the area at the weekend.

A number of cars have been burned in the area in recent weeks and at the weekend several properties were vandalised.

Councillor McCallion said; “Over the past few weeks there has been an increase in anti-social problems in the area. A number of cars have been burnt and in the early hours of Saturday morning a block of flats at Moss Park was vandalised and damaged when a fire was started there.

“For people to damage Housing Executive property is an absolute disgrace, particularly with the pressures currently facing the HE in this city and must be condemned by everyone.”

Colr. McCallion said local residents are becoming increasingly concerned about the situation.

“I am worried that unless this carry on is nipped in the bud it has the potential to spiral out of control. People in the community believe those involved in these weekend incidents are the same that have been causing problems in the Moss Park area over the last few years.

“I am calling on the parents of those involved to take action now and help stop this type of activity immediately.”
