‘We need justice for Gary’
Gary Moore was murdered in 2000.
The devastated parents of a Dungiven man murdered 12 years ago say they need justice for their son, who they believe is a forgotten victim of ‘The Troubles’.
Marie and Nevin Moore’s eldest son, 30-year-old Gary was shot dead on December 6, 2000, as he worked on a house in the Monkstown estate in Newtownabbey. It was believed the UDA killed him.
Earlier this week, police revealed they had arrested a 32-year-old man in the West Midlands for questioning about two separate murders – that of Mr. Moore and of Gavin Brett, 18, shot dead in north Belfast in July 2001. Police later said the man was released unconditionally.
“Gary was a good son. We were close. He would have done anything for anyone. He was very kind,” Nevin told the ‘Journal’. “We’ll never get over what happened.”
Marie says after Gary was killed “everything changed”, and the family’s pain is as raw today as it was 12 years ago.
“We didn’t bring life into this world to be murdered,” said Marie. “We brought life into this world to be cherished and loved. Gary wasn’t involved in anything and it was a tit-for-tat murder. Gary was innocent and we want to know who killed him.”
Marie and Nevin feel as if Gary has been a forgotten victim of ‘The Troubles’.
“Whoever did it is out there living their life, going on as normal, but we’re the ones living the life sentence. It’s torture, because Gary – he’d be 43 this October – should be here,” said Marie.
The couple are convinced that someone knows who shot their son, and hope their appeal will encourage someone who has information to “do the right thing”.
“We just hope and pray they’ll do the right thing,” said Nevin.
