Sub zero temperatures, strong winds and snow could hit Derry this weekend, weather experts have warned.

Met Éireann say Friday, will be a wintry day with sleet and snowfalls in many places with accumulations likely over high ground.

Furthermore they warn that it’ll be very cold with temperatures of only 1 or 2 degrees at best.

The Met Office say snow, ice and sub zero temperatures will start to affect much of the north early on Friday morning, and continue over the next couple of days.

They say people should alter travel plans to allow for poor visibility and icy roads.

“By 4am on Friday we expect that rain will turn to snow,” Charlie Powell from the Met Office told the ‘Journal’.

“The snow will cover much of Northern Ireland, perhaps as much as 10cms to 15cms in places.

He says while the snow will ease but further outbreaks are expected later on Friday.

“Temperatures will also drop to below zero and very strong winds could reach gale force as we go into Saturday.

“Ice will be an issue but there is the real potential for disruption,” he says.

The Met office spokesman says “things should be a little less wintry over the weekend.”
