Woman attacked college receptionist

A woman who attacked a receptionist at North West Regional College has been sentenced at Derry Magistrate's Court.

Gwen Victoria Doherty, of Bonds Hill, was charged with aggravated assault after she jumped over the reception desk, grabbed the woman by the hair and banged her head against the ground.

The 31-year-old was at the college on June 6, 2008, trying to enrol on a course when she became abusive to staff.

She shouted: "You are all b******s", and was asked to leave by the receptionist but continued to shout abuse. The receptionist lifted the phone to call a colleague for help when Doherty turned around, saw her, and shouted: "Who are you calling?". She then jumped over the counter, grabbed the receptionist by the hair and banged her head on the ground. The receptionist suffered head injuries and hair loss.

Speaking in court on Monday, Doherty's solicitor said his client had expressed deep remorse for the attack. He said: "At the time of the offence, she was suffering from mental health difficulties."

District Judge, Barney McElholm, said he would give probation another chance.

"Something has to break her cycle of offending.," he said.

He gave Doherty an 18-month probation order and ordered her to pay 250 compensation to her victim.
