Young fathers group needs your votes

A project which helps young fathers in Derry has reached the final of the 2008 National Lottery Awards which could see it get a cash grant to continue its work in the city.

The Young Father's Project, based at Shepherd's View, supports the needs of young dads or father figures aged 14-25, and their families. The project comprises a planned and structured father’s service, aimed at improving and enhancing their relationship with their children.

Now the group is in with a chance of winning a 2,000 award from the National Lottery Fund as well as taking part in a BBC One programme to be broadcast this summer. But to win, they need help from the Derry public.

John Doherty, project manager, said there were up to 50 young men involved in the project in Derry, receiving the tools to help them develop their parenting skills.

He said: “We are hoping to develop the project to Strabane and Limavady. The project encourages and enables young fathers to become more active in participating in the life of their child.”

Sharon White from the project said: “Your vote helps us to continue making a difference to young fathers and to their families.

“Please support our project by taking a minute to vote for us. Voting takes place from 21st July to 8th August. To cast your vote just visit www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards. From there, click on the Woman Magazine Award for best charity/voluntary project category and then vote for us. Alternatively you can call 0845 386 1248 to register your phone vote.”

One young father, aged 22, who joined the group six months ago, said the project helped his confidence and self-esteem.

He added: “Through the fatherhood programme my parenting skills have got better and staff have acted as mediators between the kid’s mum and me which has made a big difference. I’ve grown up a lot, even in the last six months and my life is much better, but most important of all, things are now better for the wee one.”
