Young people see crash aftermath

More than 100 young people from across Derry and Donegal have witnessed the aftermath of a road accident during a specially organised safe driving event.
Emergency services from both sides of the border took part in the event at Bready Cricket Club on Wednesday, organised by the The Road Safety Council for Northern Ireland, Donegal County Council Road Safety Section and Foyle and District Road Safety Committee.
Harry Rutherford, vice chairman of the Road Safety Council for Northern Ireland says the day was “enjoyable but serious in that we hope accidents, deaths and injuries cross-border will be reduced”.
The young people, all aged 17-20, and from various colleges in the North West, learned about the major contributing factors to road deaths while the day concluded with a simulated accident in which a trapped driver and passenger had to be freed from a car. Organisers say the event aimed to encourage safe driving among young people and focused on “the three ‘Es’ of Education, Enforcement and Engineering” and the “three ‘C’s’ of Care, Courtesy and Consideration” on the roads.
“We have come a long way since 1972 when 372 men, women and children lost their lives on the roads of Northern Ireland to under 60 fatalities in 2011.
“However one life lost is one life too many,” says Albert Smallwoods of the Foyle Road Safety Committee.
