Zumbathon in aid of Diabetes UK

Diabetes UK Northern Ireland is calling on people from Derry to sign up for its Big Zumbathon event in Pilot’s Row Community centre, Rossville Street, Derry on Saturday 15 September.

The event is one of a series of Big Zumbathons taking place across Northern Ireland on the same day. Money raised will help Diabetes UK continue its work in providing invaluable support to children and adults living with diabetes through Children and Youth camps, Family Weekends, Careline, awareness raising and campaigning for improved services. It will also help the charity carry out vital research into diabetes.

The Big Zumbathon is from 10.30am to 12 noon and participants are asked to give a minimum donation of £5 to register for the event. They are also encouraged to raise sponsorship where possible.

Diabetes is a serious condition where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high. Insulin controls the levels of glucose in the blood. People with Type 1 diabetes do not produce any insulin and, while the exact cause is still unknown, it is not in anyway linked to diet or lifestyle.

If diabetes is not managed effectively and the blood glucose levels do not stay as close to normal as possible it can lead to long-term complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and amputation. Diabetes kills more people in the UK than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

For further information on the Big Zumbathon and how to register, please contact Marina Hoey on 028 9066 6646 or email marina.hoey@diabetes.org.uk .
