A Newtowncunningham student is celebrating today after winning 30,000 euro on TV gameshow ‘Winning Streak’ over the weekend.

22-year-old Laura Dowds took part in the fourth show in the popular RTE series after her ‘three-star’ ticket was chosen during last week’s game.

It was first time lucky for Laura, who had never sent away a ‘Winning Streak’ ticket before she posted off one she had bought in the Dry Arch Complex in Letterkenny.

She was accompanied on the show by a large contingent of her friends and family who cheered her on as she took part, along with four other contestants, Carmel Kehoe on behalf of her brother John Joe Fitzgerald, Co. Kerry; Dorothy Laughlin from Co. Dublin; Larry Taylor from Newry and Gerard O’Brien from Co. Meath.

While she didn’t get to spin the wheel, she wasn’t disappointed with her 30,000 euro winnings.

Laura is in her fourth and final year of Mental Health Nursing at Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) and is currently doing a placement at Donegal Mental Health Services.

She told the show, which is presented by Marty Morrisey and Sinead Kennedy, how she had always had an interest in Mental Health Nursing and she is finding the placement very interesting.

Laura lives at home with her parents Ann Marie and Ivor and her elder brother, Mark. Ann Marie works in home help with the HSE and Ivor works in construction.

Laura’s appearance on ‘Winning Streak’ also coincided with her one year anniversary with her boyfriend Marty.

Marty is 23 and a Veterinary Assistant at the Donegal Animal Hospital in Letterkenny.

Laura told how in her spare time she enjoys keeping fit and is a regular at the gym, where she does cardio and weight training.

She also likes walking the family’s dogs, a Springer Spaniel called Sally who is seven and a six-month-old Golden Labrador called Molly.

Laura was the second Newtowncunningham woman to appear on Winning Streak in the last few weeks.

Her neighbour, friend and Miss Donegal Natasha McFadden was on the show three weeks ago.

Natasha’s appearance inspired Laura to buy some Winning Streak tickets and they proved very lucky.

Natasha, who bought her ticket in Kernan’s Centra in Newtowncunningham, won 23,000 euro on that occasion.

On the show, Laura said hello to her friend Lisa Shiels who was tuning in from Australia and family members who couldn’t be there on the night.

Laura told how she hasn’t had time just yet to think about what she would do with any winnings.
