Comments by the Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness MLA, committing to the substantial expansion of the Magee campus represent a significant step forward for the campaign says the lobby group U4D. The comments came after a meeting between the Deputy First Minister and the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce, which was attended by members of U4D.
Chairman of U4D Padraig Canavan said: “Martin McGuinness’s comments are absolutely clear that he supports the substantial expansion of Magee, as laid out in the One Plan, which will provide a full sized university provision in this city. We applaud him for making this commitment, which we believe will provide the impetus for giving our campaign renewed momentum after the disappointing recent comments by employment and learning minister Dr Stephen Farry.
“Ultimately it is political will that will achieve the very long-standing objective of a full sized university presence in Derry. With the commitment of political will from such a senior level we call on the entire city to pull behind the campaign and to ensure its success in line with the One Plan, which envisages 9,400 full time equivalent students at Magee by 2020.”
