Magilligan: Brother's tribute to Daniel Sheridan, 13, '˜you were a superstar'

The 13-year-old boy who died following a motorbike accident in Magilligan in Co Derry has been described as 'a superstar' by his heartbroken brother.

Daniel Sheridan from Dublin died after being involved in an accident at a motocross track outside Limavady on Thursday afternoon.

Daniel’s brother, Dean paid tribute to his brother, writing on Facebook: “My hero my world I’ll never forget you bro you were a superstar in the making you never gave up I’ll race u again someday up there so I hope your practising buddy love u with all my heart my hero (sic).”

Family friend, Martin Barr from Ballyclare, said the teenager, who was visiting the area with his mother and brother, “loved riding his bike”.

Martin told the ‘Journal’: “He loved other sports, like the GAA, but he loved racing bikes. It was a whole family affair and, come Thursday nights, they would pack up and head to Scotland, England or Wales. He loved that. He was a kid who always had a smile on his face.”

Martin said the teenager and his family were regular visitors to the track.

“He was a frequent user of the track, and was taking advantage of being off school in the summer. He rode the track many a time, but he had a crash and he passed away from his injuries,” he said.

Martin added: “This is a very hard time for the family, and they have many hard weeks and months ahead of them. No one would wish that on anyone.”

St Kilian’s Senior School’s Parents Association paid tribute to Daniel.

A statement said: “The Parents Association would like to extend its deepest sympathies to Daniel Sheridan’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

“St. Kilian’s Senior School will be open tomorrow at 12pm midday for those of you who would like to gather in remembrance. May he rest in peace.” Local politicians have been offering their condolences to the boy’s family.

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald said: “The community is in shock following the tragic death of a 13-year-old boy.

My thoughts are with his family and friends of this at this difficult and sad time.”

SDLP MLA Gerry Mullan said: “This is tragic and my thoughts are with the boy’s family. I want to offer my deepest condolences to the family.”

DUP Colr. Alan Robinson offered his condolences and said it was an “unimaginable horror to lose a child and, for that, a dark cloud hangs over the Roe Valley today.”

Investigations into the incident by the PSNI and Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council are continuing.
