The Bord Gais Energy Theatre has taken a bit of abuse over its name change since it was somewhat corporately renamed last year.
Not having been to that area of Dublin for a long time, I wasn’t sure about the name either. One thing’s for sure though, energy is the operative word around this part of the capital these days.
This part of Dublin is totally reinvigorated and perfectly placed to accommodate the droves of theatre visitors and business people flocking to the area, is the Maldron, Cardiff Lane. The hotel is the jewel in the crown of the Maldron portfolio in Dublin and has the atmosphere of a Dublin of a few years ago, when having a good time was the name of the game. Staff at the hotel, from check in to room service, to bar and restaurant to check out, do their job brilliantly. Those of us who’ve stayed in hotels where this isn’t the case, know that it can make or break a stay.
Mostly, the Maldron breaks that old rule of a hotel not trying as hard as it should because the location means that the people will come. The busy foyer is a testimony to the fact that this hotel hasn’t been hit by the recession. Clients from families there for the theatre, to couples on a romantic getaway to visiting business people are packing the place out on a weekly basis.
The rooms are refreshing, the beds are ridiculuously comfortable and for a city centre hotel, the presence of a 22 metre heated swimming pool transports all visitors to city break heaven. Along with this come a sauna, jacuzzi and steamroom with the appropriately named Heaven Beauty Rooms offering everything the average pamper seeker might request.
Add to all of this a restaurant with excellent, locally sourced food, and you have all the ingredients for a relaxing getaway without having to leave the hotel at all. From the superb king prawns to melt in your mouth duck, at non mouth watering prices it must be sampled.
The Maldron Cardiff Lane website says the hotel is one of the best located in Dublin. After a one night stay, it’s up there with one of the best hotels in the city full stop.
