Police say explosives and munitions were discovered today during a security alert in the Beechwood Avenue area of Derry.

The cityside alert began shortly after 11am on Monday when a house on Beechwood Avenue and a nearby alleyway and steps leading to Marlborough Street were sealed off and the area searched.

The PSNI said the search was carried out by detectives from the Serious Crime Branch as part of “an ongoing investigation into dissident republican activity”.

A 39 year-old man was arrested at the scene as part of the investigation and taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim PSNI station for questioning. Police said the arrest is linked to the “ongoing operation into dissident republican activity”. British army bomb disposal experts later arrived at the scene to examine the objects.

A number of people were stopped and searched during the operation.

Detectives subsequently also arrested a 32 year-old woman in relation to the investigation. She was also taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite for questioning.
