An investigation is under way into the death of a man at Buncrana Garda Station.
It is understood the man, who was in custody, was found dead at the station in the early hours of this morning.
He has not been identified and no information has yet been given about the manner of his death.
The matter is being investigated by the Garda Ombudsman’s office. A spokesperson said: “A man has died at Buncrana Garda Station in Donegal in the early hours of this morning. The matter has been referred to the Garda Ombudsman by the Garda Commissioner in accordance with section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005. This is standard procedure in circumstances such as these. A State post mortem will take place at Letterkenny General Hospital this afternoon.”
Donegal North East TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said this morning: “Any death of a person in Garda custody is a cause for public concern. The law is now in place, though, which means an independent investigation is automatically carried out. This should give the public confidence that the full circumstances of the death will be fully and independently investigated.
“My heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased man at this sad time.”
