Man killed in car crash was on his way to church service

A man who was killed in a car accident in Newbuildings on Sunday morning was on his way to church.

John Kitson, an unmarried man aged in his 50s from the Cullion area, was travelling in a car which was being driven by his nephew when it hit a wall on the Duncastle Road near the village on the outskirts of Derry.

The incident happened at around 11am on Sunday as the pair were travelling to a church service.

Ulster Unionist Party alderman Mary Hamilton paid tribute to Mr Kitson. “He was a great wee man, always out walking on the roads. He would always have been seen out and about. It’s terrible what’s happened. My thoughts are with his family and especially his nephew,” Alderman Hamilton said.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital but his injuries were not said to be life threatening.
