Derry Magistrate’s Court heard yesterday how a man who stood in front of a taxi challenging the driver to knock him down was ‘only a risk to himself’ on the night in question.
Sean Hegarty (21) of Dunkeld Avenue was arrested on November 29 after police were called to Greenhaw Road. Hegarty had stripped to his waist. Passers-by believed he wanted to cause harm to himself and had restrained him. He then became violent.
When he reached Strand Road, he bit the mattress in his cell before urinating in the room.
A defence solicitor said Hegarty had been “very disturbed” but was receiving help. He was given a four week sentence, suspended for 12 months,
