A 22 year-old man who escaped from police custody at Bishop Street courthouse in Derry last week has not yet been apprehended.

Dean Patrick Declan Beattie, of Glenowen Park, had been brought to court under police guard and was due to be charged with a number of serious offences.

Beattie escaped from police and scaled two security fences - one of them approximately 10 feet high, before running towards the direction of Palace Street.

Beattie had been brought to court to face a number of charges linked to a burglary on the Northland Road on December 12.

The charges included possessing an imitation firearm, a kitchen knife and assaulting the couple who lived at the property.

Beattie is also alleged to have stolen the couple’s mobile telephones, cash and Christmas presents.

An investigating officer connected Beattie to the charges in his absence and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Police have confirmed they are actively seeking to locate the 22-year-old and a police investigation into the incident is ongoing.

They have appealed for witnesses to the incident at the courthouse to contact them on 101.
