Derry’s Mayor Councillor Brenda Stevenson has paid tribute to the Derry~Londonderry~Doire team on securing first place in Race 14 and urged the people of the city to get behind the team as they arrive in their home port this morning at approximately 11am.
Speaking from Queen’s Quay during the Legenderry Maritime Festival celebrations yesterday, the Mayor said she was ecstatic at the team’s success.
“It is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved and we are extremely proud of Sean McCarter and his team and are looking forward to seeing them arrive into their home port on Monday morning. I would encourage as many people as possible to come out onto the Quay and support the team and give them a warm legenderry welcome.”
Mayor Stevenson said the Legenderrry Maritime Festival has been a huge success to date attracting thousands of families over the weekend to enjoy Music City, the Ubuntu Festival y and the wide range of maritime events and activities taking place along the Quay over the weekend.
“Its been a fantastic weekend. The weather has been phenomenal and there has been a great buzz with everyone enjoying the activities and soaking up the sunshine and the atmosphere. The fun is set to continue throughout the week with the arrival of the Clipper Race boats on Monday and Tuesday, the Beach Boys concert on Thursday and the parade of sail celebrations and final farewell as the boats depart for the next stage of the race this weekend,” she said.
