Mayor praises Foyle Cup as premier sports event

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor, Elisha McCallion, has labelled the Foyle Cup as one Derry’s premier sports events.

Speaking at the launch of the 2015 Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup Colr. McCallion said she was delighted the Derry and Strabane council was able to support the local event.

“Derry City and Strabane District Council is very supportive of this event and sees the huge benefits it brings for the city and region,” said the Mayor.

“Not only does it have a positive impact on our local economy and tourism industry but it provides us with a unique opportunity to showcase our local sports facilities and our sporting talent. The Council is committed to promoting sport and wellbeing and believes that events such as the Foyle Cup continue to play an important role in encouraging young people to embrace sport and an active lifestyle.”

The launch was attended by former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane who also pledged his support for the event which attracts youth soccer teams from across the island of Ireland, the UK and further afield.
