Mayor of Derry councillor Brenda Stevenson has welcomed Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness’ commitment to Magee University following his statement last week that he intends to meet with the Minister for Employment and Learning Stephen Farry regarding the decision to put on hold the expansion of Magee.
Ms. Stevenson, who is a Derry SDLP councillor, described the situation with the proposed expansion at University of Ulster, Magee campus as an ‘important issue’.
“As mayor of the city I welcome the fact that the Deputy First Minister has put this important issue high on his agenda and is going to make representations to Minister Farry outlining the need for the expansion to go ahead for the economic benefit of the city and region.”
Mayor Stevenson added that she hoped the Deputy First Minister would be available to attend a meeting she has convened this Thursday to discuss the issue of Magee.
“The meeting has been set up to discuss the next step forward in dealing with this important issue and the Deputy First Minister, MEPS, MLAs have all been invited to attend. It is important that the political voices of this city unite together to make a strong case for the expansion of the University of Ulster at Magee.”
