Meeting today following RTE programme

A special Council meeting is to be held today to discuss the issues arising from the RTE Investigates programme broadcast on Monday night.

During the programme, an undercover journalist posed as a windfarm investor seeking help from three politicians. The councillors, one of which was Donegal County Councillor John O’Donnell, were filmed allegedly offering to lobby for the company in exchange for what was deemed money or investment in a private business. Councillor John O’Donnell has denied any wrongdoing but there have been calls for his resignation. The Council said they are investigating the matters raised as an “issue of urgency and priority.”

Meanwhile, Inishowen-based County Councillor Martin McDermott has responded after he was named on a list of councillors with omissions in their statutory declarations. Colr. McDermott had not registered he was listed as developer of Cruagh View Developments Limited. He told the ‘Journal’ this was something he “overlooked,” and “rectified instantly” when he became aware of the omission.

He said the company was set up in 2007 and he had not made any profit from it.
