It’s been confirmed that the DUP’s Gary Middleton is to succeed Maurice Devenney as DUP MLA for Foyle.
The former Derry Deputy Mayor says he’s “delighted and honoured” to have been selected for the role.
Writing on his Twitter account, he said: “I will continue to work tirelessly on behalf of all of my constituents.”
Mr. Middleton, who hails from Newbuildings, takes over in the Northern Ireland Assembly from party colleague Maurice Devenney who stood down last week after only five months in the job.
Mr. Devenney said he was giving up the Stormont role to focus on more local matters as a member of the new Derry City and Strabane District Council.
Gary Middleton was twice Deputy Mayor of the now defunct Derry City Council.
He served in the Deputy’s role in both 2013-14 and 2014-2015.
He is a member of both the Apprentice Boys’ of Derry and the Orange Order.
He was the leader of the DUP grouping on Derry City Council and represented the rural constituency.
