Environment Minister Mark H Durkan has instructed officials to investigate claims that rats have infested a former waste company’s premises.

Enagh Youth Forum had called for action after residents reported rats in “huge numbers” in and around the Brickkiln site in Maydown, which is currently in voluntary administration.

Mr Durkan said: “I have asked my officials in NIEA to urgently investigate this situation along with the administrators to ensure that they take swift action to sort this out. I understand that the administrators have employed a specialist company to undertake the task.”

Paul Hughes from Enagh Youth Forum said: “We would like to thank the Minister for his positive intervention here on behalf of Strathfoyle, Maydown residents and those farming families who live in close proximity to the site.”

A Council spokesperson confirmed that Environmental Health officers have visited the site and Council officers have been in contact with the administrators for the site and a specialist company appointed by them to assess and undertake appropriate pest control treatments.”
